Ten Things to Do with an Antique Bobbin

If you've visited the Woolen Mill Store in Portland -- or seen us on the road -- you might have noticed our antique wood bobbins.

These little pieces of Pendleton history were indeed used in the mill -- great big long machines spin yarn onto the bobbins. The Woolen Mill Store is where bobbins go to retire! Our creative customers have come up with a laundry list of ways to use them.
  1. Candle holders. A few drops of glue or hot wax will secure a taper in place on the end of the bobbin.
  2. Legs for a stool or small table. Even after years of mill service, the bobbins are still very sturdy.
  3. Base for a lamp. You can buy the light bulb fixture and lampshade separately, and string the cord through the hollow core of the bobbin.
  4. Fish whacker. If you're the fishing type, a bobbin makes a handy addition to your tackle box.
  5. Curtain rod finials. Some people like the wide end showing; some people like the narrow end. Either way, they look nice!
  6. Vase for silk flowers. That hole in the bottom makes a bobbin a bad choice for flowers that need water... but silk flowers look lovely and dramatic displayed in a bobbin.
  7. Canvas. Paint on 'em, carve them, bust out the wood burning tools...
  8. Ribbon organizer. Anything wound on a big, open core can be stacked on a bobbin for storage -- you can see what you have on hand AND you've got an attractive way to display your stash.
  9. Personal safety. You don't want to be caught unarmed if ninjas suddenly attack!
  10. Display. You don't have to do a single thing to them. Stand them up in rows, arrange them in a wide bowl -- they're beautiful just the way they are.

We want to see what you've done with your bobbins! Feel free to post pictures (or a link to pictures) in comments so we can ooh and ahh over them.

Call the store if you'd like to sign up for either one.

Creative Customers: Andie's Felted Moose

While we were at the Sewing and Stitchery Expo in Puyallup, the Woolen Mill Store offered a seminar called Needle Felting for Young Crafters. Much to our surprise, crafters of all ages showed up for the class! Some of our adult students said that they found the idea of a class geared towards a younger audience much less intimidating than some of the other seminars geared towards experienced crafters.

One of our students -- Andie from Alaska -- sent us a picture of one of her finished projects from class. What a great looking little guy!

We do offer needle felting classes (for beginners and intermediate students) at the Woolen Mill Store -- just click on the Classes tab at the top of the page for our current schedule.

Truck Report II 3/11/2011

Hello again, friends! As we hoped, the Pendleton truck made a second delivery of mill by-products for your crafting pleasure.

The second delivery brought us 200 pounds of beautiful blanket header, so if you've been waiting for blanket pieces, now is the time to come by.

Have a crafty weekend!

Truck Report 3/11/2011

Good morning, Woolfans! It's so nice to greet another Friday morning with some good news in the delivery department: the Pendleton truck brought us nearly one thousand pounds of fuzzy selvage. This is definitely the biggest selvage drop we've had since starting the Truck Report. A true milestone!

That's pretty exciting... but it gets better! We may just be getting a second delivery of mill by-products later today. Keep your eyes on the Woolen Mill Store blog and you'll be the first to know if more fun scraps arrived.

Sewing & Stitchery Expo's Best Sellers

We had such a great time at the nation's largest Sewing and Stitchery Expo in Puyallup, WA! (It's not too soon to start planning for the 2012 show, is it?) Nothing says fun like a road trip with the ladies of the Woolen Mill Store!

If you weren't at the Expo and want to get an idea of what we offered in our booth, just stop by the store! All of our most popular offerings from Sew Expo are available here in Portland, OR:

  • Pendleton Colorplay carded wool in sixteen different colors
  • Wool felt binding in twenty different colors
  • Ultrasuede fabric
  • Wool slugs (fun fuzzy nubs for felting, stuffing, and more)
  • Wool fat quarters (a total of two yards of fabric in eight different pieces)
  • Screw-back conchos
And of course we had fabulous Pendleton fabric! Spirit of the Peoples -- our 100th anniversary fabric -- was a big hit, as were our lightweight womenswear fabrics in a rainbow of sweet spring colors. The surprise success was our Prairie Flower fabric (also available in blanket and sham form on the Pendleton website), which we showed off as an eye-catching vest.

Both the fabric and the pattern (My Favorite Vest) were bestsellers at Sew Expo -- so if you missed them in Puyallup, you can still get them at the Woolen Mill Store.

Truck Report 3/4/2011

Good morning, WoolFans! Hope you had a lovely week, and are looking forward to an even lovelier weekend.

We're having a fun time at the Sewing & Stitchery Expo in Puyallup, WA -- but since we borrowed the truck to get here and back, that means there's no weekly delivery of mill by-products for the store.

Check back next Friday morning!

Keep Calm and Sew Stuff!

In light of the nation's largest Sewing and Stitchery Expo starting on Thursday, we thought this message appropriate:

This fantastic piece of creative inspiration was hand-embroidered by the Woolen Mill Store's fearless leader, Julie. Another Woolen Mill Store employee was the lucky recipient of this during our holiday gift exchange and installed it in our embroidery room for all to share.
